METRO= BUNDU COMBAT PANTS / KHAKI
THE STORY:
The inspiration for the name of the latest addition to our trouser range came from a funny little book from a past era called “Don’t Die In the Bundu”, offering insight into how to survive in the Rhodesian, now Zimbabwean bush. It covers everything from how to tie a knot, navigate by the stars, how to signal to aircraft, which plants are edible and which animals, spiders and snakes to stay far away from. It might have been a necessity for survival in that colonial era and although some of the content has stood the test of time, some now reads as absurd and hilarious. The book was gifted by Alex’s brother to Barry; the title and content would have appealed to his sense of humour.
Barry has had a long love affair with combat pants, since getting over the dreadfully cut version all national servicemen were for forced to wear for 24 long months back in the day, since he picked up two pairs at a second hand army store in the little Italian town of Lavagna sometime in the 90’s. It was the same day that the Pope was passing through flanked by Armani suit wearing security men with submachine guns underneath their stylish jackets: Italians clearly have a broad understanding of what constitutes combat gear and definitely cut their garments far better than apartheid era military uniform designers in the good old R,S of A!
In cut, the The Bundu’s are inspired by our Basquiat pants, with the same curved leg that gives you the bandy legged look of a horseback “troepie”. The crotch is slightly dropped, a loose fit with a drawstring and belt loops like all combat trousers and the comfy fit is helped by the lightweight cotton twill used in their construction. The six pockets mean that when heading out to take on the mad world that we currently inhabit, you can potentially leave your man bag at home!
